Ryan James Philpott

Ryan James Philpott, son of Sandy and Herb Philpott and brother of Rosemary Philpott, came into the world at 11:48AM on 11/2/2009, a beautiful fall day at Boston's Massachusetts General Hospital, weighing 9 lbs. 4 oz.

At his 5-week pediatrician appointment, we discovered that he was apparently the world's heaviest baby. He weighed 14 lbs. 1 oz., having gained one pound a week since his first weekend home when his weight hit 8 lbs. 1 oz. At his 6-month pedicatrician appointment, he was officially 29 lbs. 2 oz. and 30-1/2 inches long. At one year, he was 34 lbs. 8 oz. and 35" tall, and at age 2 he weighed 40 pounds and was 3 feet, 3 inches tall. Considering that the rule of thumb is that boys are half their adult height at age 2, I think it's safe to say he is one big kid and likely to stay that way. At his fifth birthday, clocking in at 48" tall and 55 lbs., the doctor still listed him at 100th percentile for height and 98th for weight, so he's still on target.

He learned to talk early and often, and hasn't stopped since. His vocabulary is impressive, and has only grown more so now that he's learned to read. His favorite words these days are "detest," "actually," and "modified." He loves to narrate whatever he's doing, whether it's playing a game on his new Kids' Fire - one of the games requires him to spell out whatever he needs, so he's getting lots of practice sounding out words - building with Legos, or driving (let's be honest: crashing) toy cars. He also tends to hum and sing all day long, often making up his own tunes and lyrics. He (and Katie) will be joining Mum & Dad on stage as elves in the Reagle Christmas show "ChristmasTime" for the first time this year!

He is a bit of a picky eater (like his mother), but his favorite foods include hot dogs (with ketchup, of course), any kind of pasta, chicken nuggets, and scrambled eggs (preferably with faces, but no cheese hair, please). And, of course, cookies, cake, and popsicles.

His favorite books are "Treasury of Nature" (lots of pictures of bugs), "I Want My Hat Back", "The Three Little Aliens and the Big Bad Robot," and "The Avengers: An Origin Story". We visit the library every week or two and look for new books that we can read out loud together - or sometimes, he can read them all by himself.

Lots of new photos and videos are posted on the "Pictures & Videos" page.
